Oscar thoughts and other crap

My thoughts? It was great to see Heath Ledger win. Although he deserved the Oscar regardless, one wonders if the Academy would have honored such an original performance if Ledger were still alive. Jackman was surprisingly funny. Steve Martin, Tina Fey, and Ben Stiller's Joachim Phoenix giant 70's porno bush beard were highlights as well.

And in the horror front, it was cool to see long time make-up FX guru Greg Cannom get some gold (although there's no fucking way the team from Hellboy 2 weren't more deserving).

But holy flurking schnit did the rest of the show blow. Although they did mention the late Maila Nurmi AKA Vampira, the FAILURE of the Academy to include Forrest J. Ackerman in their "In Memoriam" reel really burned my ass. A fucking film critic got a mention, yet Forrest, a tireless campaigner for sci-fi and horror (arguably two of Hollywood's profitable genres) and a child-at-heart who has inspired some of our greatest talents, never got a mention. I've heard speculation that it's because Forrest wasn't an Academy member - if that's the case, a big fat Oscar up the ass to the Academy. His contributions to the industry over his lifetime far outweigh fucking membership dues.

In other sad news, we lost one of the slickest vampire pimps of all time. Robert Quarry, best known for his role as Count Yorga, Vampire, passed away at 83 this week. While he spent the biggest part of the 80's and 90's doing b-grade stuff like Droid Gunner and Teenage Exorcist, back in the 70's, Quarry starred in a number of classic horror flicks, including Yorga and it's sequel, Deathmaster, Madhouse, and Dr. Phibes Rises Again with Vincent Price, and in one of my favorites, the Blaxploitation voodoo classic Sugar Hill . He also starred alongside Paul Newman in a couple of late 60's flicks, WUSA and Winning.

Thanks Robert, and RIP.
